McNeese Terminates Search for New Athletic Director
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the search for a new athletic director at McNeese State University to a grinding halt.
McNeese President Dr. Daryl Burckel said in a press release:
This was a very thorough search and many highly qualified candidates applied for this position...however, after carefully consideration, we have decided to terminate this search and leave the position unfilled for now
Burckel also said that the cancellation of spring sports has caused a decline in revenue for the school, which also contributed to his decision the cancel the search.
He also spoke on what the future holds for upcoming McNeese sports:
The recovery process is very fluid but we are planning for a full fall sports season. We are waiting on guidance from the NCAA and Southland Conference on when student-athletes can return to begin practice and participate in team meetings.
A new search will begin later this academic year and all applicants have been encouraged to reapply. I sure hope the NCAA allows football games to resume in August. However, it's much different than the NFL. Not all college teams or conferences have TV deals that can make them money.
If the NCAA did allow football to resume in the fall and play with no fans in the stands, universities with smaller fan bases like McNeese would really be missing out on the whole family experience of going to a game in The Hole on a Saturday night.
