Monica’s ‘So Gone’ Gets Sales Boost Thanks to the #SoGoneChallenge and Chance The Rapper
Monica is heading back to the top thanks to Chance The Rapper and the #SoGoneChallenge.
The Missy Elliott-produced track "So Gone" dropped in 2003 but it's recently gotten new legs from the #SoGoneChallenge, in which a person must rap a verse over the song's instrumental. Last week, Chance The Rapper decided to take part in the challenge with a cute rap for his fiance which wound up going viral. It gained over 200,000 retweets and over 300,000 likes on Twitter since it was posted on his page.
Since then, Apple Music and Spotify have cited an increase in streams for the track. Apple Music says that streams for "So Gone" went up by 233% while sales went up by 407%.
"It’s amazing what can happen when Chance gets involved," said an Apple rep to Forbes. As for Spotify, streams for "So Gone" doubled with a 129% increase.
Hundreds of people have jumped in on the #SoGoneChallenge in the past month. And most recently Monica herself decided to celebrate while participating in the challenge in a video with Missy Elliott.
"Monica will still snap," raps Monica in the clip. "Kick down doors until my heels crack / Now I’m making racks while they rapping on my old track."
Towards the end, she adds: "Heard there was a #SoGoneChallenge / Man, I said ‘No way’ / Song still bang like we in 20-0-3."
