Oh dear reader, today was a magical day in the world of breakfast and serendipitous surprises. I woke up to text messages and missed phone calls. As I checked to see what the panic was, I saw it!

Wake up! Nelson's Donuts is open!

I have never gotten dressed so fast in my life. I got in the truck and may, or may not, have sped to Nelson's. As I pull up, I see my worst fear. The line for the drive through was from their parking lot all the way down to the strip mall. Apparently everyone else knew they were open too. I refuse to wait in long lines, it's why I can't stand going to a certain chicken finger place on Ryan Street. I decided to take a chance. I pulled into the parking lot and got down. The window was open, my heart was racing.

Is this really happening right now? Am I about to order donuts from a place that I never thought I would ever see again?

I walked up to the window and instantly felt like I was a kid trying to peek over the small counter jutting out from the window. The lady looks at me, I am sure my mouth was wide open. There was a moment of silence as she stared at me waiting for me to say something. I blurted out the first thing that came to mind.

I am so freaking excited to be here right now!

I was clutching my money in my hand as I gathered my thoughts. I ordered a dozen glazed and a coffee drink thing. She turned around and got to work. I gathered my composure and started looking around the inside. It was beautiful! Everyone was hard at work. The boxes were stacked on a shelf as someone was working hard to get them put together. They were pulling them fresh from the grease and glazing them as fast as they could.

The lady returns back with my donuts and tells me my total. I can only imagine what I looked back with my donuts in my hands as I fat-guy jogged back to my truck. I could smell them as I closed the door. I couldn't take it any more, I had to see them and I had to taste them!

I opened the box, heard the angels, and grabbed my first one. Hot and fresh would be an understatement. I took my first bite and the colorful words that came out of my mouth would probably make a sailor blush. They were absolutely amazing! Hot, fresh, soft, sweet, a little crunch. I was instantly transported back to stealing donuts from the college classes during Sunday school in church when I was younger. They were perfect and just like I remembered them before the fire.

They are now open, but only serving glazed. They are also currently doing cash only. Around 11:00am, they posted that they had run out for the day, but would be open all weekend. Have some patience with them, although they were running donuts out fairly quick, the lines were still long. If you are in a hurry, just go run up to the window like I did. You won't regret it!
