As the region continues to recover from the devastating effects of two hurricanes in 2017, on Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, 2018, the Caribbean was hit with a 7.6 magnitude earthquake. Puerto Rico, as well as the US and the British Virgin Islands, are currently on tsunami alert.

According to The Guardian, the US Tsunami Warning Center has the region on alert and warns that "waves up to a metre above tidal levels are possible in the hours after the earthquake struck north of Honduras." The United States Geological Survey, who tracks earthquakes around the world, shows where the earthquake hit in both areas of the Caribbean.

At the time of this breaking news, there was no threat of a tsunami, but the center is required to warn residents to take precaution in protecting themselves in the event a tsunami does happen.

With all they've been through these past months, we continue to pray for their continued recovery and safety.
