Reverend Al Sharpton Plans to Visit Meek Mill in Prison
You can add Rev. Al Sharpton to the list of supporters who feel that Meek Mill’s 2-4 year prison sentence was unjust. The civil rights activist announced that he will visit the embattled rapper on Monday (Nov. 27) at the Chester State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania where he is imprisoned for violating his probation.
Sharpton revealed his plans during a rally at the National Action Network (NAN) in Harlem, N.Y., on Saturday (Nov. 25). The 63-year-old political analyst believes Mill is being unjustly punished.
"Just because someone does something that is wrong, does not give you the right to do wrong to them," he told the attendees. "The sentence must fit the violation."
In a statement (via NBC Philadelphia), the NAN said that Sharpton's visit is consistent with the organization's long history of "criminal justice reform efforts."
"In the 1990’s, Rev. Sharpton and others helped Tupac Shakur get out of solitary confinement at the request of his mother and NAN has been monitoring cases across the country," the statement reads.
Sharpton is among several activists and celebrities who have expressed outrage over Mill's sentence. Recently, Colin Kaepernick visited Mill in prison. "He’s in good spirits."
JAY-Z has been the most outspoken critic. The Roc Nation mogul recently wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times, in which he criticized the criminal justice system and how it entraps young black men.
Meanwhile, Mill's attorneys have filed an appeal to have Judge Genece Brinkley, who has overseen Mill's decade-long probation, recused for alleged misconduct.
