Finally, The 20th anniversary Essence Music Festival will kick-off with a bang this year as Prince headlining Friday July 4th.  Ahead of his performance he gave Essence magazine a rare interview and the 55-year old legend even graces the cover of their June 2014 issue.  In the cover story his Purple Highness discusses his life as a musician and why he doesn’t curse in his music anymore saying,

“Did you ever hear Muhammad Ali curse? Would you curse in front of your kids? To your mother?” (quotes via Today). After naming several female artists, including my favorite, Janelle Monae, Prince continued, “They’re all my sisters.  We shouldn’t curse at them.  We need to treat all of them, and all people, like royalty.”

Prince said being spontaneous helps fuel his creativity and is the reason he's been in the game so long.  He added, “A real musician is always in creative mode.” By the way, Prince has been kickin it with a new band, 3rd Eye Girl.  The music legend said he enjoys the spontaneity of performing them as opposed to the structural, well-rehearsed format with his former band, The Revolution.  Prince explained,

“[To] ask them to do what we did tonight? To improvise? There would be a problem.  That’s what I love about this new arrangement.  The energy.  They’re in the moment.  I’m not putting down The Revolution, even though people would love to see us together again. I owe a great debt to them.  But I’m doing something else.”
