Lake Charles, La. - Sheriff Tony Mancuso is warning area residents about a scam that has resurfaced.

The victims reportedly receive a call from someone claiming to be with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, who warns them a "warrant has been issued for their arrest due to their failure to appear for jury duty or grand jury", said a media release. The victim is then instructed to "purchase a prepaid PayPal card to void the warrant and avoid arrest." Don't be fooled, it is a scam.

Under certain circumstances a law enforcement officer may contact someone to inform them there is a warrant out for their arrest, but under no circumstance will a law enforcement officer ask for any form of payment over the phone. Most valid arrest warrants will be served in person by law enforcement, said Sheriff Mancuso.

Anyone in SWLA who believes they have been victimized by scammers is encouraged to contact CPSO at 491.3605.
