A 12- year-old girl may have saved Halloween for New Orleans.  Brooklyn Hughes was assigned a Girl Scout project that she admitted she actually forgot to do. Her Girl Scouts Junior Troop 40150 leader, Carrie Fisher, instructed the members to take some sort of action. But, even though she blew the deadline, she still put her project into play.  What kind of action was Brooklyn Hughes going to take? Hughes, like many other kids, hasn’t been able to see her friends because of the coronavirus pandemic. With school being virtual and many events being cancelled, Hughes was hoping that Trick-or-Treating would not be cancelled.

According to Nola.com, Brooklyn Hughes emailed her case for saving Halloween in New Orleans to Mayor LaToya Cantrell. In her email to the Mayor, she made clear the understanding that children and their families should wear masks and use social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19.  Hughes even suggested that trick-or-treating could last all day instead of waiting until sundown since Halloween is on a Saturday this year. She explained that it could space out the flow of trick-or-treaters.

Three days later, Brooklyn received a reply from Cantrell. To Brooklyn’s surprise it was great news. The email said, “Of course we will have Halloween!”

The mayor also said that her administration was still hammering out guidelines. She also told Hughes that she loved her ideas and that she was proud of her. She signed off as “Your Auntie Mayor.”

Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced at a news conference on Thursday that New Orleans would loosen some coronavirus restrictions revolving around bars and restaurants beginning Saturday at 6 am. But, Cantrell also announced that Halloween would not be canceled but added they safety precautions for trick-or-treating. Cantrell said that Halloween rated a mention during the briefing on looser coronavirus rules mainly because of Brooklyn, a sixth grader at Bricolage Academy.

Brooklyn's mom, Krystal Johnson, showed her pride for her daughter on Facebook when the Mayor gave Brooklyn credit.

Way to go, Brooklyn! You rocked your project and have been a role model to others on how to take action. You had the courage to step up and gave suggestions.
