The Detroit Lions Continue The Trend Of Poaching Saints Coaches

The Detroit Lions have just joined a growing list of college and NFL teams that are picking coaches off Sean Payton's coaching tree.

The latest coach to leave New Orleans is former Tight Ends Coach Dan Campbell.

Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp had this to say about Campbell:

With more than 20 years of experience as both a coach and player in the National Football League, Dan knows the rigors of professional football and what it takes to be successful. He will help promote the culture we want to establish across our organization, while also bringing with him high energy, a respect for the game and an identity with which everyone can align themselves.

Campbell grew up in Clifton, TX and was a standout player at Texas A&M. He was drafted by the New York Giants in 1999. During his eleven year NFL playing career, he's played for the Giants, Cowboys, Lions, and Saints.

Lions president Rod Wood said:

When we began the search for a head coach, it was imperative that we find the right leader who values our commitment to building a winning culture based on organizational alignment and collaboration. The leadership Dan has exemplified throughout his football career has prepared him for this next step, and we are excited to support him as our new head coach.

Campbell was the interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2015 and had a 5-7 record. He was most recently not only the Tight Ends coach for the Saints, but he was also the Assistant Head Coach.

After firing General Manager Bob Quinn and Head Coach Matt Patricia in November, the Lions believe they have found the team to turn their organization around, as they have also announced the hiring of Brad Holmes from the Los Angeles Rams as their new General Manager.
