1999 - Cyber-Youth Network is Launched
For the first time in history, the Cyber-Youth Network is launched. America's urban students got a web site specifically designed to address their educational needs and interests.
1989 - Former Saint Louis Cardinals Bill White named president of the National League
Former Saint Louis Cardinals first baseman, Bill White, is named president of the National League. On this day White became the first African American to head a major sports league.
1981 - The Air Force Academy drops its ban on applicants with sickle cell trait.
The Air Force Academy drops its ban on applicants with sickle cell trait, another form of discrimination.
1964 - Blacks, Puerto Ricans Boycott NYC Public Schools
During the civil rights movement black and Puerto Rican students boycotted New York City public schools to demonstrate their support for full integration of the city's public schools and an end to de facto segregation.
1965 - Geraldine McCullough Wins Widener Gold Medal
World renown Geraldine McCullough, sculptor, wins the Widener Gold Medal award.
1956 - University of Alabama Gets Their First Black Student
Autherine J. Lucy became the very first black student to attend the University of Alabama. She was expelled three days later "for her own safety" in response to threats from a mob. Autherine Lucy Foster graduated in 1992 from the University with a master’s degree in education. The same day, her daughter, Grazia Foster, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in corporate finance.
1920 - Negro Baseball League founded
Because blacks were not being accepted into the major and minor baseball leagues, they formed their own professional teams. Some of the earliest known games date back to 1850's. It wasn't until 1920 that the Negro Baseball League founded.
