Chief Keef Claims That He Created Mumble Rap
Social media seems to still be recovering from a heavy debate over who invented trap music after T.I. and Gucci Mane both claimed the title, but now Chief Keef is sparking a new sub-genre pioneer argument of his own. Last night (April 17), the Chicago rapper claimed that he created "mumble rap," which has become a popularized sub-genre within the hip-hop community.
Keef asks his followers if they love him for creating the trendy, slurred rap style, crediting himself as the creator of mumble rap.
"Do you guys love me for creating Mumble???" he tweets.
The musical style tends to feature rappers spitting lyrics about using drugs and drinking lean in a garbled manner over a catchy beat. Many newer rappers have been placed in the mumble rap category over the years including Young Thug, Future, Lil Pump and more, but not everyone is a fan of being placed in that genre, such as Trippie Redd.
Keef has been considered part of the mumble rap genre by fans in the past, but labeling himself as its pioneer is already brewing up a debate on Twitter. While fans of the new school of rap have expressed their agreement to the claim, old school hip-hop listeners are arguing that veteran artists such as Ol' Dirty Bastard, Bone Thugz-n-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia have given the sub-genre its true beginnings.
If you recall, Black Thought previously took credit for inventing mumble rap, which he clarified after people believed that he "shut down" the genre following his epic 10-minute Funkmaster Flex freestyle. last last year.
