If you are currently living in a shelter, with a relative, or at a friend's home because you lost everything in the August floods that left SE and East Louisiana under water, you may be eligible for a temporary home. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has teamed up with FEMA and recently announced that they are making Manufactured Housing Units (MHUs) available to some flood victims who've been displaced by the horrific disaster.

One main criteria is if you’re eligible for FEMA rental assistance, but not able to use it because of a lack of places to rent in your area. Please know that these MHU are NOT the same type of models used in previous disasters. Below are more details concerning the units:

* All units are constructed to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and FEMA standards.
* Units range from one to three bedrooms.
Those flood victims with access and functional needs will be accommodated with units that include ramps, platform steps and more.

If you’re eligible to receive an MHU, it may be possible to have the unit put on your property or in a commercial park. Though these are temporary homes, FEMA may allow you and your family to keep the unit for up to 18 months. You will need to prove that there's a need for continued use of the unit. You will also be required to show that you are making an effort towards finding a permanent place to stay as well.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this, contact the FEMA helpline now at (800) 621-3362. You can't be eligible until you apply for federal disaster assistance.
