Looking for a Bold Future, Become a State Trooper

The Louisiana State Police prides itself on a proud history and a bold future. If you believe you have what it takes to become a Louisiana State Trooper, we encourage you to apply now as the Louisiana State Police Commission has resumed Cadet testing.

The Louisiana State Police has a history that dates back to 1922, when the Louisiana Highway Commission was formed in response to the arrival of the automobile. At the time, the Highway Commission patrolled Louisiana’s highways with only 16 motorcycles. By 1928 the Highway Commission grew to over 70 uniformed officers and an additional branch of law enforcement, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, was established to deal with criminal activity not related to traffic laws. That was until July 28, 1936, when the two divisions of law enforcement were combined and the Louisiana Legislature passed a bill that created the Louisiana State Police.

The application process is simple. First, visit the Louisiana State Police Commission website at http://laspc.dps.louisiana.gov/ and download the Cadet Application. Applications can also be picked up in person between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Louisiana State Police Commission office, located at 7979 Independence Blvd, Suite 208, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70806. Once an application is obtained, verify that you meet the minimum qualifications, which include:

1. Two (2) years of experience as a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified peace officer in a full-time position, whose job duties include armed duty with the power of arrest.

2. A minimum of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university, (must attach transcript or degree); or

3. Any two (2) year combination of Options 1 and 2 above, whereby thirty (30) semester hours will be equivalent to one (1) year of experience; or

4. Three (3) years of continuous active military duty in the United States Military (must attach a DD-214 or letter from current commanding officer verifying service).

Once minimum qualifications are verified, complete the application and return it to the Louisiana State Police Commission by mail to, State Police Commission, P.O. Box 66555, Baton Rouge, LA 70896; or in person during the same business hours.

Once your application is received, the Louisiana State Police Commission will contact you in reference to scheduling your Cadet exam. Exams are given monthly and the following dates are scheduled through 2014:

May 28, 2014

June 25, 2014

July 23, 2014

August 27, 2014

September 24, 2014

October 22, 2014

November 19, 2014

December 17, 2014

Upon passing the State Police Commission Cadet exam, applicants will be notified and the hiring process to become Louisiana’s finest will have begun.
