French Montana: Rappers Who Drop Albums With No Features Are Weirdos
Going platinum without any features on your album is a distinction fans and more than a few publications began harping on after J. Cole accomplished the feat with his 2014 album, Forest Hills Drive. Don't count French Montana, whose Jungle Rules album is littered with A-List guest appearances, as someone who will ever aim to do the same, though. Speaking with the folks at Paper, the Bronx-bred MC offered his take on the idea of dropping projects with no features, and he's not a fan of it.
"Who sits there thinking about weird shit like [going platinum with no features]?" he tells the site. "Those people who put albums out by themselves are weirdos. Music is about having fun. If I'm chilling with A$AP Rocky, or chilling with Drake or The Weeknd and we record, and then I have to say, 'Look here, bro, I'm thinking about dropping this album just by myself.' Artists would stop fucking with you."
Now, there's no telling whether or not French's claim is an accurate one, but it's clear he himself is a pretty popular guy. In that same piece, he calls Drake and The Weeknd some of his closest friends, as they're both artists he's collabed with over the last year. Really, French's collabed with a who's who of rap stars on pretty much every project he's put out since making it to the mainstream.
That's a trend he's recently continued with his new "Unforgettable (Remix)," which features vocals from Mariah Carey. It's safe to say French isn't changing his mind about doing features with as many superstars as possible, and it's hard to blame him.
