Music and the Arts are an essential part of education for kids of all ages. These programs enhance critical thinking and improve language and reading skills, builds confidence, and open the door to personal connections and cultural discovery. I am so proud to say that I am a product of wonderful music programs in school. Shout out to my former music teachers Mr. Moffet, Mrs. Franklin-Williams, Mrs. Chavis, and Mr. Bryant! Each of them made an impression on me and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn Music and the Arts under their leadership.

My daughter is in choir and band programs at her school and when I heard the 2022 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands was going to be in Houston, I knew it was something she needed to see. Marching band tradition is just one of the many things that make Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) special. We went with a group of friends and their daughters, all of which are in bands too. Even more exciting was the fact that none of them had ever seen marching performances on this level, let alone 8 elite HBCUs competing at a Battle of the Bands.

There were actually no winners because this particular "Battle of the Bands" event was only an exhibition. It was an opportunity for 8 HBCU bands to show off their award-winning musicianship and entertain the thousands of people who came out to see them at Houston's NRG Stadium. The HBCU field shows included two bands from Louisiana, Southern University and Grambling State University, Prairie View A&M, Alabama A&M, Alcorn State, Bethune-Cookman, Kentucky State, and North Carolina A&T. They all were amazing!

Even though it was all for fun and entertainment, it's hard not to be a little competitive by naming a winner anyway. This is exactly what HBCU Sports is giving folks a chance to do. As they have done in the past, they are giving you a chance to name the winner! Who really won this thing? Watch all 8 incredible field shows below. Then take the HBCU Sports poll to vote for the marching band that stole the show!

Trust me, this is not going to be easy. Enjoy the show!

Who really won this thing? Right now Southern University has the #1 stop, with Bethune-Cookman on their heels in the #2 position. What say you?  Take the poll and vote for the band you think won.

LOOK: Here are the biggest HBCUs in America

More than 100 historically Black colleges and universities are designated by the U.S. Department of Education, meeting the definition of a school "established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans."

StudySoup compiled the 20 largest historically Black colleges and universities in the nation, based on 2021 data from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics. Each HBCU on this list is a four-year institution, and the schools are ranked by the total student enrollment.
