With Jayden Daniels wrapping up his 2023 Heisman Trophy campaign and turning his focus to the NFL Draft, it looks like it will be time to shine for a Lake Charles native in the ReliaQuest Bowl.

Last week, LSU Quarterback Jayden Daniels announced via Social Media that he will skip the team's Bowl Game in Tampa and prepare for the NFL Draft. That paves the way for Lake Charles Native Garrett Nussmeier.

Nussmeier was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and moved several times growing up due to his father's career as a football coach. He attended Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Nussmeier passed 3,788 yards and 38 touchdowns in his junior season. As a senior, he passed for 2,815 yards with 33 touchdowns and five interceptions. Nussmeier committed to play college football at LSU over offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Georgia, Baylor, and North Carolina.

Nussmeier made an impression in last year’s SEC title. Throwing for 294 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Daniels. He followed it up in the bowl game, rotating in, and going 11/15 for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

At last, Nussmeier will make his first career start on January 1st in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin after Daniels opted out. LSU can use the game to fully assess how the redshirt sophomore handles a start before he potentially takes over next season. To start full-time, Nussmeier will have to hold off Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann

“I'm more excited to get out there and to play my best is really the feeling that I have,” Nussmeier said, “to get out there and show people what I can do and show people that I can lead this offense to its maximum potential.”

LSU will face Wisconsin on January 1st in Tampa Bay, Florida with kickoff slated for 11:00 a.m. The Tigers are a 10-point favorite.
