Jay-Z to Premiere Trayvon Martin Docuseries at 2018 Tribeca Film Festival
Jay-Z's Trayvon Martin docuseries is coming very soon. On Wednesday (March 21), the folks at Entertainment Weekly revealed that the new six-part doc, titled Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, will make its debut at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City between the dates of April 19-28.
The forthcoming docuseries will provide an in-depth look at the controversy surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin, a Black teenager who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Florida on Feb. 26, 2012. In the aftermath of the shooting, protests broke out across the U.S., with people debating the validity of Florida's Stand Your Ground law—a provision that allows for the use of lethal force if someone feels their life is jeopardized by another person—and the role race played in Zimmerman's acquittal in Martin's killing.
Jay is executive-producing the series alongside Trayvon Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, and people like Jenner Furst and Nick Sandow. Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is based on Sybrina and Tracy's book and the Lisa Bloom-scribed Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It.
Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story will be Hov's second docuseries detailing the circumstances surrounding the death of a young Black man. The first was titled TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, a series that studied the events surrounding the unconstitutional prison time endured by Kalief Browder, who eventually committed suicide after dealing with the traumatizing ordeal.
