Lil Mama’s ‘Sausage’ Video Debuts, Twitter Has a Field Day
Not every one likes “Sausage” as much as Lil Mama. The former America's Best Dance Crew judge made her comeback to rap with her new safe sex mantra “Sausage” earlier this month, but even though the song has a positive message, unfortunately fans and critics alike have a lot of negative feelings about the new video that accompanies the track.
The visual, which resembles her 2007 “Lip Gloss” storyline, features a day in the life theme accompanied by synchronized choreography. Once the effort dropped on World Star Hip-Hop on Thursday (May 28), the reactions on social media were more focused on the bad rather than the good. Moments after the Walu-directed video appeared online, Twitter users called her out for using "any and everything that's been trending on black Twitter" and slammed her for not featuring the original "Sausage Movement" founders. Others urged her to "screw the haters."
However, Mama sticks to her roots. The Brooklyn girl with the old soul gets nostalgic over the throwback beat. She hits every eight-count while showcasing her moves on the basketball court, which is quite entertaining. Unfortunately, the concept takes on a weird homage to Mary J. Blige. The rapper puts on black sunglasses and a scarf around her head just like MJB does in the video for "Not Gon Cry.” She also takes lines from the Grammy Award winner's song for “Seven Days.”
Overall, the song is a mashup of old school and new R&B and hip-hop, including Chedda Da Connect’s “Flicka Da Wrist” and Slick Rick's classic song “Mona Lisa." However, even with all of the tributes and effort, according to Twitter haters, it doesn’t seem like Lil Mama can redeem herself and achieve the height of fame and recognition she once had. There really seems to be no coming back after she bumrushed the stage during Jay Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" performance at the 2009 MTV VMAs. But we're rooting for her.
