Mandatory Online Sales Tax Coming in 2019 for Louisiana Shoppers
It appears that sometime in 2019 you'll have to start paying sales tax on internet purchases in Louisiana. We just don't know exactly when that'll start.
Louisiana is ramping up its push to begin collecting this sales tax. However, a deadline to force out-of-state companies that sell online products in Louisiana to remit taxes has yet to be announced.
The rules for collecting taxes for online sales from large out-of-state retailers has been set by a state commission. But for now, those regulations are voluntary.
Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says a mandatory requirement is months away.
You may recall that in June the U.S. Supreme Court made a ruling which paved the way for states to require the collections. Some online retailers have already begun voluntarily charging and turning over sales taxes.
But in Louisiana, things are a bit complex. A parish-by-parish sales tax system has complicated the efforts to force compliance.
