Meek Mill Released From Prison Following Supreme Court Hearing

After months of legal back and forth, Meek Mill has been freed from thanks.

Following a Supreme Court hearing today (April 24), a judge decided to release the Philadelphia-born rapper. The news was first announced by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, who has been working closely with Meek since he was first incarcerated back in November of 2017.

Meek left prison after a Pennsylvania high court ordered him freed on bail while he appeals his convictions. The Supreme Court ruling overturns that of Judge Genece Brinkley, who had previously been handling Meek's case and was the one who sentenced him to four years in prison for violating his 10-year long probation months shy of its conclusion, which drew nationwide outrage. It's been a long road since then—including the revelation that Meek's arresting officer for his original sentence was considered corrupt by the Philadelphia District Attorney's office in March and was investigated for undisclosed reasons.

This doesn't mean that Meek's legal troubles are over. He has to return for a hearing in about three months to determine the possibility of overturning his conviction.

XXL has obtained an official statement from Meek Mill discussing his release. “I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including JAY-Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time. While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive," he said.

Meek continued his statement by thanking many of the judicial offices that aided him. "To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice—not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct. Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues. In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career.”

Meek has previously revealed that he wants to use his freedom to work towards justice reform and to lobby for incarcerated minorities who are in similar legal situations.
