No Sales Tax Break For Louisiana This Hurricane Season, Here’s Why
With hurricane season beginning June 1, many Louisiana residents are gearing up to prepare their homes and families—but once again, they're doing so without the benefit of a weather preparedness sales tax holiday.
Unlike many other states that offer a tax-free week to help residents save on emergency supplies, Louisiana continues to miss out. The state used to offer several sales tax holidays, including ones for hurricane preparedness, back-to-school shopping, and even hunting season. However, most of these were suspended starting in 2016 due to budget shortfalls. In fact, the hurricane preparedness holiday was reportedly canceled unintentionally during legislative changes.
Since then, Louisiana lawmakers have prioritized revenue generation to keep state services running—understandable, but it’s still frustrating to see that while tax breaks remain for hunting gear, families preparing for hurricane season or sending kids back to school are left paying full price.
The good news? There’s hope on the horizon. Legislation is in place to reinstate both the hurricane preparedness and back-to-school sales tax holidays starting after June 30, 2025. That means this year’s hurricane season won't include the tax break, but we could see it return in 2026.
Here’s to hoping Louisiana brings back this small but meaningful break to help residents better prepare for the storms ahead and back-to-school. How do you feel about missing out on weather preparedness, Sales Taxes? Let us know in the comments.
