It could be 2016's parting shot to Louisiana. A good chance of thunderstorms and the potential for some heavy downpours will ring out the old year and welcome in 2017. For New Year's revelers that will mean a need to carry an umbrella and maybe include some rubber boots as your choice of footwear.

The current forecast for Saturday and Sunday for almost all of Louisiana includes a very significant probability of soaking rain. As of this morning, the Storm Prediction Center is not forecasting severe weather but that could change over the next day or so.

This morning a cold front is pushing across the state. That front will bring a chance of showers and a few thundershowers to the area as it moves through. It is also expected to lower temperatures from the balmy almost 80-degree readings parts of the state has experienced since Christmas Day.

Friday is expected to be mostly sunny across the state with cooler temperatures but the nice weather will be very short lived. By Saturday a low-pressure trough is expected to move out of the Four Corners area of the Desert Southwest and provide instability in the atmosphere over Louisiana. This very slow moving system bolstered by strong winds aloft from the jet stream should make for a soaking rain event through the weekend.

As of now forecasts do not suggest the rainfall potential will producing flooding rains. Most of the forecast models estimate parts of the state will receive anywhere from two to four inches of rainfall before the system moves out of the area on Monday.
