National Teacher Appreciation Day is officially today, May 2, 2023. Did you thank your teachers for all the hard work they do? If not, you're in luck because it just so happens that Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7 through May 12! So, that gives you a little more time to honor our favorite educators.

Teaching can be a challenging job, especially today. I can do many things, but teaching isn't one of them. Just being honest, I don't have the patience. It takes a special kind of person to want to do this job. You have to love education and, most of all, kids.

Speaking of remarkable people, I want to shout out to my cousin Shon Merritt! She is a 7th-grade teacher at Southwest Louisiana Charter in Lake Charles, LA, and was recently honored for her educational accomplishments by the American Press.

I'm so proud of you, Shon! Congrats to you once again. You deserve the acknowledgment. I had excellent role models in the educators and faculty members that taught me. In the band, it was Mr. Moffett and Mr. Bryant. In choir, it was Mrs. Chavis and Mrs. Franklin. Coach Hunter, Washington, and Westin. The hilarious Mr. Conway, boy, was he a hot mess! The motherly teachers like Mrs. Flag, and Mrs. Fusiler, to name a few.

They were all instrumental in teaching me the importance of education and helped to shape my outlook on life in one way or another. I am grateful to them all for their love and support. Teachers are critical. They spend more time with our children during the day than we do.

So they can significantly impact a child's life, good or bad. Who was or is your favorite teacher? Let us know. Send them a shout-out in the comments section below this post. They deserve it! If you have a picture of them, KPLC 7News encourages its viewers to salute their favorite teachers by submitting photos online.

To the teachers out there, we thank you for your hard work and dedication to education!
