DeRidder, La. - The Louisiana Passenger Task Force, Louisiana State Police Troop D, (LSP) and the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office will join forces to host a FREE "Back to School" child safety seat check in DeRidder at Green Chevrolet, 307 East First Street, on Saturday, August 5, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Certified safety technicians will be on site to make sure child seats are properly installed, said an LSP media release. Free booster seats will be given away on a first come first serve basis, but recipients must meet the criteria listed below.

  • Child and vehicle must be present
  • Child must weigh from 40 to 100 pounds
  • Child must be less than 4 feet 9 inches tall
  • Child must be at least 4 years old
  • Only one seat per child

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children. Louisiana state law requires drivers to ensure every child in a motor vehicle equipped with safety belts is properly secured, regardless of seating position in the vehicle. Many injuries and deaths can be prevented by properly using child safety seats. - LSP Troop D

The benefits of attending on Saturday gives parents and or caregivers the opportunity to speak with a trained technician in how to properly install child restraints, and determine if their child safety seat is correct for the child's height and weight.

For any person who can not make it to the event for a child safety seat inspection can make an appointment with the Louisiana State Police Troop D, 337.491.2519, or the Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, 337.460.5443.
