Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” Is Not Officially Certified Diamond
Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” is one of the hottest songs of 2019. Although the song has been certified three-times platinum, it's not yet gone diamond as he and Chart Data announced on Twitter on Wednesday (July 3).
Earlier today, Nas X jumped on his Twitter account and announced that “Old Town Road” is now certified diamond, which is a certification given by the RIAA after a song or project has sold over 10 million units in the U.S. For his announcement, Nas X tweeted, in all caps, “OLD TOWN ROAD JUST WENT DIAMOND!!!! WTFFFFFF” along with a six-second meme of an alien kicking in a child’s bedroom door.
Shortly after the tweets were posted, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) denied Chart Data's claims that “Old Town Road” has sold 10 million copies in the U.S. As of now, officially, the song has sold over three million copies.
For their part, the folks at Chart Data say they got their information from Lil Nas X's record label. "To clarify: Columbia's twitter account posted a tweet celebrating "Old Town Road" going Diamond, which has since been deleted. @RIAA confirms the song is 3x Platinum. Occasionally mistakes happen," reads a tweet from Chart Data.
Nevertheless, “Old Town Road” is still going strong on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song has reigned at No. 1 for 13 consecutive weeks, surpassing Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow,” and Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again” to claim the longest run at the top by a hip-hop song.
