Recording artist/entrepreneur Akon will be launching a Solar Academy in Bamako, Mali. The purpose of the Senegalese American’s initiative is to train local African engineers and entrepreneurs in order to teach them how to produce solar power. “Akon Lighting Africa,” is set to provide sustainable living options to well over 600 million Africans who still lack access to electricity.

So far the solar energy that has been implemented in parts of Africa has provided locals more time to sell their merchandise at night, and in some places the crime rate has dropped due to having lighting where there once wasn’t any.
