Join the nation's fire servicemen hero's and become a firefighter volunteer today.  Now it's easier than ever to sign-up.  Today (Thursday May 28, 2015) the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) launched the an online portal to its new Make Me a Firefighter volunteer recruitment campaign.  Departments from across the nation can now join the campaign and showcase their volunteer opportunities at http://portal.nvfc.org.

Firefighter volunteers used to make-up 69% of the nations service, but since 1984 that number has declined 12%.  So there is a great need for volunteers today, especially millennials (persons between the ages of 18 to 34).  To help with a nationwide recruitment campaign, the NVFC was awarded a SAFER grant from FEMA. The first campaign is the Make Me a Firefighter initiative, which consists of a department portal where volunteer and combination fire departments can post their volunteer opportunities.
Starting August 1, potential volunteers can search for opportunities and connect with their local departments.  This summer and fall, the NVFC will also offer helpful resources through the campaign, like recruitment ads to help local fire departments recruit millennials, women, and minorities.  This includes materials and tools that departments can customize and localize, plus training to assist departments in conducting a successful recruitment program.

NVFC Chairman Kevin D. Quinn said,
“Recruitment is a challenge for many volunteer and combination departments across the country,” Quinn continued. “Yet our research shows that 44 percent of millennials are interested in volunteering with their local department. Many simply don’t know the need for volunteers exists. The Make Me a Firefighter campaign will help build awareness among the public as well as provide departments with the tools and resources they need to recruit to this and other target audiences.”
