People come to Louisiana for many reasons, but the number one reason is Mardi Gras. French for “Fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras is a celebration that leads up to the Catholic holiday of Lent.

As far as preparations for Mardi Gras, they never really end. It's Mardi Gras for some people all year round! Plans are set in motion for the next year, days after Fat Tuesday, and the Madi Gras season starts ramping up days after Christmas.

The Mardi Gras Krewes wastes no time getting started on next year's fabulous costumes. Most are handmade and feature intricate beading, sequins, and feathers. The traditional Cajun courir de Mardi Gras costumes take a little time to make. This is especially true of the "suits" and ceremonial apparel worn by the Mardi Gras Indians.

Some Mardi Gras balls are so extravagant and spectacular that they feature national music artists, have a guest list of 10,000 plus people, mind-blowing decorations, and luxurious buffets.

There is a reason people come from around the world to spend the Mardi Gras season in Louisiana. It's a time to fellowship with neighbors and the community, celebrate great food, and enjoy music, culture, and tradition. Depending on the Parish, various events leading up to Fat Tuesday will differ.

For example, some communities host trail rides and chicken runs, while others have several parades and daily themed events, from car shows to doggie-owner look-a-like contests.
