Jay-Z Performs New Freestyle, Pays Tribute to Nipsey Hussle
These days, Jay-Z is stadium status. However, on Friday night (April 26), the rap giant performed in his hometown of New York City for a special B-Sides 2 performance at Webster Hall where he delivered a new freestyle that pays homage to the late Nipsey Hussle.
Hov hit the stage in a black suit, backed by a live band. A huge mock Roc-A-Fella chain hung from the rafters. Plenty of jams were performed but it was Jay's poignant freestyle talking about Nipsey that really struck a chord.
"Gentrify your own hood before the people do it/Play imminent domain and have your people moving/That's a small glimpse into what Nipsey was doing/To anybody still confused as to what he was doing," Jay rapped. "The neighborhood designed to keep us trapped/They redlined it so property declines if you live by Blacks/They depress the asset and take the property back/A ruthless but ingenious plan in fact."
Hov has been vocal about his admiration of Nipsey's hustle. He also wrote an open letter for the Cali rapper's memorial touching on the importance of what Nip was trying to accomplish in his hood.
Friday night's show featured other special moments as well. Hov had surprise guests, bringing out former rivals Nas, Cam'ron and Jim Jones. It was definitely lit.
