A student at LaGrange High School was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office for possession of drugs and a firearm on the school's campus. Detectives were called to the school after the gun was discovered in the student's backpack.

According to Kim Myers, at about 12:30pm, detectives learned CPSO safe school officers observed a disturbance during the lunch period between a group of students. When the deputies approached the students, they dispersed but when one student, a 17-year-old male, passed the deputy, he could smell a strong odor of marijuana. When the deputy detained the student, he attempted handing a backpack off to another student, and the deputy spotted a handgun in the open section of the backpack.

Deputies searched the backpack and found a loaded gun and marijuana.

The 17-year-old student has been booked into the Juvenile Detention Center and charged with illegal possession of a firearm on school campus, possession of marijuana, possession of CDS in a drug-free zone, illegal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and possession of a firearm in the presence of narcotics.
