Meek Mill Proposes Probation Reform Bill
Meek Mill held a press conference at the Philadelphia Municipal Services Building on Tuesday (April 2) to propose a new bill designed to change the state of Pennsylvania's probation system.
Flanked by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and Van Jones, the CEO of REFORM Alliance, the Philly rapper championed the proposed measure, House Bill 1925, which he believes will keep fewer people on probation.
"I always speak for the people without a voice," Meek told the crowd. "I hate that it had to be me to go to jail for it to become an issue. But it is an issue and this is where we are at. So I decided to use my time, my platform, my energy to speak for people who don't have a voice."
According to TMZ, the bill is designed to stop courts from handing out consecutive probation sentences and prevent the court from extending a person's time on probation or parole over the "nonpayment of fines and fees." The site says it will also establish incentives that "reward good behavior."
Meek added that he lost a lot of time away from his son and family dealing with his probation issues, and he doesn't want other fathers to go through the same thing.
