Shooting In Lafayette Sparks Questions About Gun Control Laws In Louisiana [VIDEO]

A rash of tragic shootings from Charleston, Chattanooga and now Lafayette, has brought the countries gun control laws to the forefront once again. KPLC-TV reports people are asking...Are our laws strong enough? How easy is it to get a gun? What exactly are the gun laws here in Louisiana?

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso was hand to answer some of those concerns and told KPLC, "There are some restrictions, even though yes, technically, it's legal, there are a lot of restrictions in a lot of places."

He continued, "Even though you have the right to carry an open weapon gun, if the police decide to stop you and check your ID and make sure that you're not a convicted felon and legally possess that gun, they have the right to do that."

Anytime the Second Amendment is in question, the subject stirs-up a lot of emotion. Some feel the law should be updated or adjusted to include stiffer penalties and stronger guidelines. Others oppose any changes to the law. For more on this story check-out the video below:

The fact is, a background check is required from the FBI here in Louisiana. However, the sellers has the right to approve or deny an applicants request to purchase a firearm. Even though we are an open weapon state, firearms are not allowed in school zones and government buildings. Business owners can how their own restrictions to this law.
