In an effort to combat impaired driving in our area of South West Louisiana, as well as to increase seatbelt usage, the Louisiana State Police Troop D will conduct a DWI and seatbelt checkpoint on Friday, April 19, 2013, from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the Calcasieu Parish area. Their mission will be to find and remove impaired drivers from the road before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others. Vehicle occupants who are not properly restrained will be ticketed as well during the checkpoint.

Motorists are asked to remember to designate a sober driver before traveling to any place where alcohol will be consumed. "DRIVE SOBER or GET PULLED OVER."

Accroding to the LSP,

The majority of vehicle occupants who die in crashes in our state are not wearing a seatbelt. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash.

Louisiana state law requires that all vehicle occupants in all seating positions be properly restrained, during the day and at night. "Buckle up Louisiana. Every trip. Every time."

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.

Support for this checkpoint is provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
