2Pac t-shirts sold at Forever21 and Urban Outfitters have landed both retailers in hot water. Both are being sued for copyright infringement by entertainment photographer Danny Clinch for using unlicensed photos that he took of the late hip-hop legend.

One of the items is a jersey with 2Pac's 1996 Rolling Stone cover photo on the front.

The lawsuit claims the pictures in question were licensed to Planet Productions in 2012 by Amaru/AWA Merchandising in an agreement that stated Amaru was acting on behalf of those who owned the copyrights for the pictures. But Clinch copyrighted the photos in 2002 and says Planet Pro. wasn't thorough in getting the proper information regarding ownership of the copyrights. Instead, it went ahead and made a deal with a manufacturing company Bioworld, who created and sold the shirts.

The lawsuit was filed in New York on May 31st and Clinch is seeking $600,000 in damages--plus he wants any other merchandise remaining to be destroyed.

“Defendants, without the authorization, knowledge or consent of the plaintiff, deliberately and willfully copied, displayed, distributed, and sold the copyrighted photographs on such infringing T-shirts and perhaps other apparel,” according to the lawsuit.
