The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office (CPSO) reported there was a shooting at Moss Bluff Elementary School early this morning. The shooting occurred in a classroom, and a 7- year old student was shot.

***IN A UPDATE:

Sheriff Tony Mancuso just released new details in the incident.  The Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call at approximately 7:50 a.m., that a student was shot in a classroom.  The CPSO investigation revealed a first grader brought a gun to school in his backpack.  The gun was loaded and fell out of the bag in class.  When a fellow student picked the gun up, it fired and struck their 7-year old classmate.

According the the CPSO, the injured child was transported to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.  The incident is being deemed as an accidental shooting, and because they are underage, none of the students involved will be held responsible. Sheriff Mancuso reported the investigation was ongoing, and once it's complete it will be handed over to the D.A.'s Office, to determine whether charges will be filed against the gun owner.

Sheriff Mancuso stated, “I’m a pro-gun advocate and I believe in the 2nd amendment that allows us to possess and carry firearms, however, I also believe that it is our responsibility as gun owners to keep our guns locked and out of the reach of children.” He continued by giving some good advice to area gun owners saying, “In addition, talking to our children about the dangers of guns can help them know how to react if they encounter a gun at school or even at a friend’s house.”

We still don't know the condition of the child who was shot, but praying for his recovery and well being.
