This Friday will be Juneteenth. While many have heard the name, there are honestly many who do not understand the gravity of the day being celebrated. The day signifies the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the confederacy. The celebration initially started in Texas, but is recognized by many in most, if not all, states.

As a matter of fact, there are companies now that are making Juneteenth a national holiday for many. Ironically, the emancipation of Black slaves had been done over two years prior, but unfortunately, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent with delivery.

This Friday, while there will be Juneteenth Celebrations in the city, I will dedicate my 5 o'Clock Jump Off mix to the holiday and will feature hip hop songs of substance including Public Enemy, Arrested Development, and more. Fleet DJ Butta will be mixing the tunes, which are about empowerment for my generation and hopefully the new generation of Blacks who love the Hip Hop Culture.

Make sure you tune in whether listening on the app or in your ride, but don't miss it. Check out some of my favorite conscious music videos below and make sure you spread the word of the importance of our culture and the Juneteenth holiday to your family and friends.
